heard from him in earlier times, as pointed out by the ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī ibn Saʿīd and others. Al-Mundhirī did not notice this in "al-Targhīb" (3/257), nor did al-Haythamī in "al-Majmaʿ" (8/22), so they considered it weak due to Ibn Lahīʿah! The latter of them also attributed it to al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" and "al-Awsaṭ," saying: "The rest of its narrators are those of the authentic collections." The ḥadīth was also recorded by al-Kharāʾiṭī in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (p. 9/60) from Ibn Lahīʿah. It has a supporting narration from Abū Hurayrah, raised to the Prophet, with the wording: "Indeed, Allāh elevates a servant by his good character to the rank of fasting and prayer." It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (1/60), who said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said. It was also recorded by him and others from ʿĀʾishah, raised to the Prophet, with similar wording: "The ranks of one who stands in prayer at night and fasts during the day." He also said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated it (1927).
