" it was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī with two isnāds, the men of one of them are the men of the authentic collections except for ʿAbd Allāh ibn Budayl ibn Warqāʾ, who is trustworthy." And al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (3/190): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī with two isnāds, one of which is authentic." Note: (al-riyāʾ) with a rāʾ. And it appeared in "al-Targhīb" and "al-Majmaʿ" as (al-zinā) with a zāy. And al-Mundhirī said: "And some of the ḥuffāẓ have specified (al-riyāʾ) with a rāʾ and yāʾ." I said, and so it is in all the manuscript sources and others to which we attributed the ḥadīth, and likewise Ibn al-Athīr mentioned it in "al-Nihāyah" and said: "In a narration: 'O mourners of the Arabs.'" It is said: to announce the death of the deceased, to inform about it, and to lament. Al-Zamakhsharī said: in (naʿāyā) there are three aspects: the first is that it is the plural of (naʿī), which is the verbal noun like ṣafī and ṣafāyā; the second is that it is a collective noun as in akhiyyah and akhāyā. And the third: that it is the plural of naʿāʾ, which is the verbal noun. And the meaning: O mourners of the Arabs, come, for this is your time and era, meaning that the Arabs have perished. And al-naʿiyān is a verbal noun meaning the announcement of death, and it is said to be the plural of nāʿ, like kurāʿ and ruʿiyān. It is well-known in Arabic that when a noble among the Arabs died or was killed, they would send a rider to the tribes to announce his death to them, saying: naʿāʾ so-and-so or O mourners of the Arabs, meaning: so-and-so has perished, or the Arabs have perished with the death of so-and-so. So naʿāʾ is from naʿīt like naẓẓār and darāk. So his saying: naʿāʾ so-and-so means: announce the death of so-and-so as you say: darāk so-and-so meaning: catch him, but as for his saying "O mourners of the Arabs" with the vocative particle, the vocative is omitted, its estimation is O this, announce the Arabs, or O those, announce the Arabs with the death of so-and-so, as in his saying
