a man from among the Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was a governor in Egypt. A man from his companions came to him and found him with disheveled hair. He said: Why do I see you disheveled while you are a governor? He reminded him [of the Prophet's teachings]. I said: This isnād is authentic; its narrators are those of the authentic collections except for Ismāʿīl ibn Masʿūd, who is Abū Masʿūd al-Jaḥdarī, and he is trustworthy. There is another chain of transmission, narrated by al-Jurayrī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah. that a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ traveled to Faḍālah ibn ʿUbayd while he was in Egypt and arrived to find him tending to his camel. He said: I did not come to visit you, but I came for a ḥadīth I heard from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, hoping you have knowledge of it. He saw him disheveled and said: Why do I see you disheveled while you are the governor of the land? He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to forbid us from excessive comfort. He saw him barefoot and said: Why do I see you barefoot? He said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ commanded us to go barefoot sometimes. It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/22): Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, saying: al-Jurayrī informed me of it. It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4160) and al-Nasāʾī (2/292-293). I said: This isnād is also authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, but al-Nasāʾī does not include the command to go barefoot and adds: "Ibn Buraydah was asked about excessive comfort? He said: grooming."
