- "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) forbade combing the hair except occasionally." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4159), al-Nasāʾī (2/276), al-Tirmidhī (1/326), Ibn Ḥibbān (1480), Aḥmad (4/86), al-Ḥarbī in "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth" (5/79/2), al-Kushay in "Juzʾ al-Anṣārī" (Q 11/1), and from him by Abū Nuʿaym (6/276), Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (Q 8/2), and al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (3/212/1) through various chains from Hishām ibn Ḥassān who said: I heard al-Ḥasan from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal with it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ." I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs, but al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī is a mudallis and he narrated it with ʿanʿanah in all the mentioned chains, but it has two supporting witnesses that strengthen it. The first: from Ibn ʿUmar as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. It was recorded by al-ʿUqaylī in "al-Ḍuʿafāʾ" (398) from Muḥammad ibn Mūsá al-Ḥarīrī who narrated to us from Jawāriyah ibn Asmāʾ from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar, and he said: "Muḥammad ibn Mūsá is not followed upon it, and this has been narrated from another perspective with a chain more sound than this." I say: It seems that al-ʿUqaylī is referring to the ḥadīth of al-Ḥasan mentioned before. The other supporting witness is: "He used to forbid us from luxury; we said: And what is luxury? He said: Combing the hair every day."
