(Note) The ḥadīth with the wording of the translation is attributed in "al-Fatḥ al-Kabīr" to Muslim from Kaʿb ibn Mālik, but I did not see it there. And Allāh knows best. There will be two other supporting narrations for the ḥadīth from Ḥamzah ibn ʿAmr al-Aslamī and Abū Hurayrah under number (1565).

"Forgive him (meaning the servant) seventy times a day." It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (5164) through the route of Ibn Wahb who said: Abū Hāniʾ al-Khawlānī informed me from al-ʿAbbās ibn Julaid al-Ḥijrī who said: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr say: "A man came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: O Messenger of Allāh, how many times should we forgive the servant? He remained silent, then he repeated the question, and he remained silent. When it was the third time, he said" and mentioned it. It was also narrated by al-Tirmidhī (1/353-354) from this route, but he did not provide its wording, rather he referred to the wording of Rushdīn ibn Saʿd from Abū Hāniʾ al-Khawlānī with a similar meaning. He said: "A ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth." I say: Its isnād is authentic. Abū Hāniʾ's name is Ḥumayd ibn Hāniʾ and he is trustworthy, as is al-ʿAbbās ibn Julaid al-Ḥijrī. Thus, the chain is authentic. The statement of Abū Ḥātim: "I do not know if ʿAbbās ibn Julaid heard from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr" is refuted by his explicit statement of hearing from him in this isnād. He was followed by Ibn Lahīʿah from Ḥumayd ibn Hāniʾ with it. It was narrated by Aḥmad (2/111). He was also followed by Saʿīd ibn Abī Ayyūb who narrated to us from Abū Hāniʾ from ʿAbbās al-Ḥijrī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb: "A man came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: O Messenger of Allāh, I have a servant who misbehaves and wrongs..
