in a narration from him by al-Masʿūdī from al-Qāsim and al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd with it. The ḥadīth has been previously mentioned as number (25) for another paragraph, and it is repeated here for some additional context in the referencing, and to provide a supporting narration with the wording: "Do not punish with the punishment of Allāh." It was narrated by Aḥmad (1/219-220), narrated to us by Sufyān from Ayyūb from ʿIkrimah from Ibn ʿAbbās: he said: the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī. It was also narrated in "Ṣaḥīḥ" (4/329), al-Tirmidhī (1/275), al-Nasāʾī (2/170), and also by Aḥmad (1/217, 282) and from him by Abū Dāwūd (4351) and al-Dāraquṭnī (334) through other chains from Ayyūb from ʿIkrimah: "that ʿAlī burned a group who apostatized from Islam, and this reached Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: If it were me, I would have killed them, for the saying of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): Whoever changes his religion, kill him. And I would not have burned them for the saying of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): Do not punish with the punishment of Allāh. This reached ʿAlī and he said: Ibn ʿAbbās is correct. The context is from al-Tirmidhī and he said: "A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ." Al-Bukhārī does not include the phrase "Do not punish with the punishment of Allāh," but rather his wording is: "... If it were me, I would not have burned them due to the prohibition of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). And I would have killed them...". In a narration by Aḥmad, which is also the narration of al-Dāraquṭnī, he said: "Woe to the son of Umm ʿAbbās" instead of "Ibn ʿAbbās is correct." There is no contradiction between the two narrations, as "woe" is a word of mercy and lament, and it can also be used to express praise and amazement. As in "al-Nihāyah," it is here in the latter sense as is apparent
