- "Whoever among you can benefit his brother, let him do so." This was recorded by Muslim (7/18-19), Aḥmad (3/382), and al-Kharāʾiṭī in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (p. 90) through the route of Ibn Jurayj, who informed me that Abū al-Zubayr heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) permitted the incantation for the snakebite for the Banū ʿAmr." Abū al-Zubayr said: I heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: "A man among us was stung by a scorpion while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). A man said: O Messenger of Allāh, should I perform an incantation? He said...." and he mentioned it. Layth ibn Saʿd corroborated this from Abū al-Zubayr. It was narrated by Aḥmad (3/334). In another narration by Muslim and Aḥmad (3/302-315) through the route of Abū Sufyān from Jābir, he said: "I had an uncle who performed incantations for scorpions, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) forbade incantations. He came to him and said: O Messenger of Allāh, you have forbidden incantations, and I perform them for scorpions? He then mentioned the ḥadīth. In another narration from this route: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) forbade incantations, so the family of ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: O Messenger of Allāh, we have an incantation we use for scorpions, and you have forbidden incantations. They presented it to him, and he said: I see no harm, whoever can..." Ibn Mājah also recorded it (3515) in a similar manner and said: "He said to them: Present it to me, and they presented it to him, and he said: There is no harm in this, these are covenants."
