my father narrated to me, Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to me from Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Isḥāq, from Ibn ʿUyaynah, from a man that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed by his Companions while they were walking, and they complained of fatigue, so he instructed them to walk briskly. I said: And this is mursal because Ibn ʿUyaynah, whose name is al-Ḥakam Abū Muḥammad al-Kindī, their client, is a tābiʿī who narrated from Abū Juḥayfah and others. And all its narrators are trustworthy, narrators of the two Shaykhs, except for the father of Ibn Qutaybah, whose name is Muslim ibn Qutaybah, for I did not find a biography for him, and it seems he is unknown, as al-Khaṭīb (10/170) and others have given a biography for his son ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muslim ibn Qutaybah, but they did not mention this father among his teachers!
- "Perform two rakʿahs and do not return to such behavior. He meant delaying the khuṭbah. He said this to Sulaik al-Ghaṭafānī." It was reported by Ibn Ḥibbān (569) and al-Dāraqutnī (169) through the route of Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm, who narrated to us from his father, from Ibn Isḥāq, who narrated to me from Abān ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Mujāhid, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: "Sulaik al-Ghaṭafānī entered the mosque on Friday, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was delivering the sermon to the people, so the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him..." and he mentioned it. Ibn Ḥibbān said: "He meant the delay." I said: And its isnād is good, as Ibn Isḥāq explicitly stated the narration, unlike
