those whom Allāh saved from intellectual stagnation and sectarian fanaticism! As for the followers raising their voices in saying "āmīn" behind the imam, we do not know of any authentic marfūʿ ḥadīth that necessitates adopting this practice. Therefore, we remain upon the original ruling previously mentioned. This is the position of Imām al-Shāfiʿī in "al-Umm," that the imam raises his voice with "āmīn" but not the followers, and it is the most balanced and just of the opinions on this matter. I observe that if the Companions (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum) had raised their voices with "āmīn" behind the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), it would have been reported by Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr and others who transmitted his (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) raising his voice with it. This indicates that the silent recitation by the followers is the sunnah, so reflect on this.

- "You must walk briskly." Narrated by al-Ḥākim (1/443, 2/101) and Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ṭibb" (2/8/1) from Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah, who reported from Ibn Jurayj, who informed me from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from Jābir, who said: "Some people complained to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) about walking, so he called them and said: (he mentioned it) so we walked briskly and found it easier for us." He said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed, and it is as they said. It has a mursal corroboration reported by Ibn Qutaybah in "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth" (1/127/1):
