- "If there is anything in which bad omen is true, it is in a woman, a horse, and a house." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/85), who said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us from ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Zayd that he heard his father narrate from Ibn ʿUmar with it as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. This is a ṣaḥīḥ isnād according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, and it was also recorded by Muslim (7/34) from this route. Al-Bukhārī also recorded it through another route from ʿUmar with the wording: (If it was ...), and it will appear, Allāh willing, under number (799). The ḥadīth implies that there is no bad omen in anything, because its meaning is: if bad omen were established in anything, it would be in these three, but it is not established in anything at all. Therefore, what is found in some narrations with the wording "bad omen is in three" or "indeed, bad omen is in three" is an abbreviation and alteration by some narrators. And Allāh knows best.
