- "What do I have to do with the world?! What am I and the world?! My example and the example of the world is like a rider who shaded under a tree, then left it and went away." It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/60), al-Ḥākim (4/310), and al-Ṭayālisī (p. 36, no. 277), and from him by Ibn Mājah (2/526), Aḥmad (1/391, 441), and Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (2/102, 4/234) through various chains from al-Masʿūdī, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allāh as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth." And it is as he said, for it has a supporting narration that follows. It was also narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and Abū al-Shaykh in "Kitāb al-Thawāb" as mentioned in "al-Targhīb" (4/113). Its reason, as Ibn Masʿūd said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) lay on a mat which left marks on his side. When he woke up, I began to wipe his side and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, would you not allow us to spread something on the mat for you?' The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) then said" [the ḥadīth].
