It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (2/108), al-Tirmidhī (1/238), al-Dārimī (2/264), al-Kharāʾiṭī in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (30), al-Dāraqūṭnī (303), and al-Ḥākim (2/46) through the route of Ṭalq ibn Ghanām from Sharīk and Qays from Abū Ḥuṣayn from Abū Ṣāliḥ from Abū Hurayrah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. Al-Tirmidhī said, "A ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth." Al-Ḥākim said, "The ḥadīth of Sharīk from Abū Ḥuṣayn is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I said: There is a consideration in this, for Muslim only narrated from Sharīk as a supportive narration, as al-Dhahabī himself mentioned in "al-Mīzān," and he is weak in memory, and similarly his supporter Qays, who is Ibn al-Rabīʿ, but the ḥadīth is ḥasan due to their conjunction, and it is ṣaḥīḥ due to other routes. For it was narrated by Abū Dāwūd through the route of Yūsuf ibn Māhak al-Makkī who said: I used to write for so-and-so the expenses of orphans he was the guardian of, and they mistakenly charged him with a thousand dirhams, so he paid it to them, and I recovered for them twice that amount from their wealth. He said: I said, "Take back the thousand they took from you?" He said: No, my father told me that he heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say, and he mentioned it. Its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of Muslim, except for the Companion's son, who was not named. Aḥmad narrated it similarly (3/414), and al-Dāraqūṭnī narrated only the marfūʿ part, saying: From a man of Quraysh from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he mentioned it
