"I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity but Allāh and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh, establish the prayer, and give the zakāh. If they do that, they will have protected their blood and wealth from me, except by the right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allāh." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1/63-64) and Muslim (1/39) through the route of Shuʿbah from Wāqid ibn Muḥammad, who said: I heard my father narrating from Ibn ʿUmar in a marfūʿ manner. The third [narrator] is Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) and his wording is: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say there is no deity but Allāh. When they say there is no deity but Allāh, they will have protected their blood and wealth from me, except by its right, and their reckoning is with Allāh." Then he recited, "You are only a reminder; you are not over them a controller" (Sūrah al-Ghāshiyah, 22).

Then he recited, "You are only a reminder; you are not over them a controller" (Sūrah al-Ghāshiyah, 22). It was recorded by Muslim and al-Tirmidhī (2/237, Būlāq edition) and Aḥmad (3/300) through the route of Sufyān from Abū al-Zubayr from him. Al-Tirmidhī said: "It is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ." It was also recorded by al-Ḥākim (2/522) and he authenticated it according to their criteria, and al-Dhahabī agreed with him, although there is some scrutiny. Ibn Jurayj followed him: Abū al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say it, without mentioning the part: Then he recited, etc
