"I will surely give the banner to a man who loves Allāh and His Messenger, and Allāh will grant victory through him." He said: ʿUmar said, "I never desired leadership before that day, so I stretched myself towards it, hoping it would be given to me. When the next day came, he called ʿAlī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) and gave it to him, saying, 'Fight and do not turn back until Allāh grants you victory.' He proceeded a little and then called out, 'O Messenger of Allāh, for what should I fight?' He said, 'Until they testify that there is no deity but Allāh, and Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh. If they do that, then...'" and so on. It was recorded by al-Ṭayālisī, number (2441): narrated to us by Wahb from Sahl with it. From this route, it was also recorded by Aḥmad (2/384) and the wording is his. This is a ṣaḥīḥ isnād according to the criteria of Muslim. 13 - From Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd from him with the wording: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity but Allāh, and Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh, establish prayer, and give zakāh. Then their blood and wealth are protected from me, and their reckoning is with Allāh." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/345) through the route of Saʿīd ibn Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd from him. This isnād is ḥasan; all its narrators are trustworthy and well-known except for Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd, from whom a group has narrated, and Ibn Ḥibbān has declared him trustworthy. It was also recorded from this route by Ibn Khuzaymah as mentioned in "al-Fatḥ" (12/232). I have previously mentioned that the ḥadīth was narrated by a group of Companions, and I mentioned the first of them. The second: Ibn ʿUmar with the wording: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity but Allāh, and Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh, establish prayer, and give zakāh. If they do that, they have protected their blood and wealth from me except by the right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allāh."
