I said: This is a sound isnād; all its narrators are trustworthy, and ʿUthmān is Ibn Saʿīd Ibn Kathīr al-Ḥimṣī. The ḥadīth is a sign of his prophethood (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), for our predecessors conquered the lands of Persia and Rome, and we inherited that from them. Many of us became arrogant and turned away from the sharīʿah and its etiquettes, such as beginning food with "In the name of Allāh," so they forgot this to the extent that you can hardly find among them anyone who remembers!
"O ʿUthmān, I was not commanded to practice monasticism. Have you turned away from my sunnah?! He said: No, O Messenger of Allāh. He said: Indeed, part of my sunnah is to pray and sleep, to fast and eat, to marry and divorce. Whoever turns away from my sunnah is not from me. O ʿUthmān, your family has a right over you, and your own self has a right over you." It was narrated by al-Dārimī (2/132): Muḥammad Ibn Yazīd al-Ḥizāmī narrated to us, Yūnus Ibn Bukayr narrated to us: Ibn Isḥāq narrated to me: al-Zuhrī narrated to me from Saʿīd Ibn al-Musayyib from Saʿd Ibn Abī Waqqāṣ who said: "When the matter of ʿUthmān Ibn Maẓʿūn occurred, who had abandoned women, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent for him and said... (and he mentioned it)." Saʿd said: By Allāh, the men among the Muslims were determined that if the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) approved of ʿUthmān's condition, we would castrate ourselves and become celibate. I said: This is a good isnād; all its narrators are trustworthy, the men of al-Bukhārī except for Ibn Isḥāq, who is trustworthy but a mudallis. However, he explicitly stated that he heard it, removing the suspicion of his tadlīs. There is another isnād for it from ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā) similar to it, and it is corroborated as I have clarified in "Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl" (2075).
