It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī: Isḥāq narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Razzāq from Ibn ʿUyaynah. I said: And this is a good isnād. And he recorded (3/105/2) with this isnād from Ibn Jurayj: Abū al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Ṭāwūs say: "I said to Ibn ʿAbbās about sitting on the heels? He said: It is the sunnah. So I said: We see it as harsh on a man! He said: It is the sunnah of your Prophet." It was also recorded by Muslim and Abū ʿAwānah in their "Ṣaḥīḥ" collections and by al-Bayhaqī (2/119) through another route from Ibn Jurayj with it. And this isnād is authentic, as both Ibn Jurayj and Abū al-Zubayr explicitly stated transmission. There is another route from Ibn ʿAbbās narrated by Ibn Isḥāq who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Najīḥ al-Makkī narrated to me from Mujāhid ibn Jabr Abū al-Ḥajjāj who said: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās mention it, and I said to him: O Abū al-ʿAbbās! By Allāh, we used to consider this harsh from whoever did it! He said: It is a sunnah." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī. I said: And its isnād is ḥasan, as Ibn Isḥāq also explicitly stated transmission. Then he narrated with another authentic isnād from Abū Zuhayr Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥudayj who said: "I saw Ṭāwūs sitting on the heels, and I said: I saw you sitting on the heels! He said: Did you not see me sitting on the heels? But it is the prayer, I saw the three ʿAbd Allāhs doing that: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, doing it." Abū Zuhayr said: And I saw him sitting on the heels. I said: So in the ḥadīth and these reports is evidence of the legitimacy of the mentioned sitting on the heels, and that it is a sunnah to be practiced and not for an excuse as some of the fanatics claimed, and how can it be so when these..
