- "Whoever loves for the sake of Allāh, hates for the sake of Allāh, gives for the sake of Allāh, and withholds for the sake of Allāh has perfected faith." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4681) and Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh Dimashq" (6/16/2, 9/396/2) through various chains from Yaḥyá ibn al-Ḥārith from al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from Abū Umāmah from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that he said it, and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is good; its narrators are trustworthy, and regarding al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who is Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dimashqī, there is slight criticism, but it does not lower his ḥadīth from the rank of ḥasan, and for this reason, the ḥāfiẓ said about him, "Truthful." The ḥadīth has a corroborating narration, related by Abū Marḥūm ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Maymūn from Sahl ibn Muʿādh ibn Anas al-Juhanī from his father that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it, and he mentioned it and added: "And marries for the sake of Allāh." It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (2/85) and Aḥmad (3/440). Al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a ḥadīth ḥasan." I say: Its isnād is also good. It was corroborated by Zabān ibn Fāʾid from Sahl ibn Muʿādh with it. It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/338). Thus, the ḥadīth, with the combination of the two chains, is authentic, so do not be deceived by al-Manāwī's criticism of it, as it lacks thoroughness, and it is a mistake on his part to suggest that the ḥadīth has only one weak chain! It was also narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah in "Kitāb al-Īmān" (no. 133 in my verification) with a good isnād from Kaʿb ibn Mālik as a mawqūf narration. What has preceded indicates that its origin is marfūʿ
