we entered upon ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib on the day of Eid al-Aḍḥā, and he presented to us a dish of stew. We said, "O Commander of the Faithful, if only you had offered us some of this duck and goose, as there is plenty of good [food]." He said, "O Ibn Zurayr, I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)," and he mentioned it. Aḥmad narrated it (no. 1/78) and Ibn ʿAsākir from him (12/188/1) through two other chains from Ibn Lahīʿah with it. Ibn ʿAsākir also narrated it from the route of Ḥarmalah from Ibn Wahb with it, as a statement of ʿAlī. I say: This is an authentic chain; all its narrators are trustworthy. Ibn Lahīʿah is only feared for his poor memory if the ḥadīth is not narrated by one of the ʿAbādilah from him, as some of the early imams have stated. And this, as you see, is from the narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb from him. Al-Haythamī said in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (5/231): "Aḥmad narrated it, and in it is Ibn Lahīʿah, and his ḥadīth is ḥasan, but it has weakness." And I say: The correct view is that his ḥadīth is weak except in the narration of the ʿAbādilah from him. It is authentic in the narration of one of them from him, as mentioned before. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful, but he became confused after his books were burned. The narrations of Ibn al-Mubārak and Ibn Wahb from him are more reliable than others, and he has some narrations in 'Muslim' that are corroborated."

- "There are four whom Allāh detests: the swearing seller, the arrogant poor person, the adulterous old man, and the unjust leader." It was narrated by al-Nasāʾī (1/359) and Ibn Ḥibbān (1098) through the route of Ḥammād ibn Salamah from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar from Saʿīd al-Maqburī from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, and he mentioned it. I say: This is an authentic isnād according to the conditions of Muslim.
