al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī said (3/153): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and al-Dāraqūṭnī with a weak chain." It has another supporting narration with similar wording: "O people, knowledge is only through learning, and understanding of religion is through seeking understanding. Whoever Allāh intends good for, He grants him understanding in religion. Only those among His servants who have knowledge truly fear Allāh." It was said in "al-Majmaʿ" (1/128): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Kabīr' from Muʿāwiyah as a marfūʿ ḥadīth, and it includes an unnamed man and ʿUtbah ibn Abī Ḥakīm, who was deemed reliable by Abū Ḥātim, Abū Zurʿah, and Ibn Ḥibbān, but weakened by a group." I said: And in "al-Taqrīb": "He is truthful but makes many mistakes." al-Munāwī said: "It was also narrated by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim. Ibn Ḥajar said in 'al-Mukhtaṣar': Its chain is ḥasan because it includes an ambiguous narrator supported by its coming from another route." I said: And it seems al-Ḥāfiẓ referred to that route as the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah. It was also narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir in 'Tārīkh Dimashq' (6/117/1) through another route from Ismāʿīl ibn Mujālid.

- "Restrain your belching from us, for the fullest of them in this world will be the hungriest on the Day of Resurrection." It was narrated from Ibn ʿUmar, Abū Juḥayfah, Ibn ʿAmr, Ibn ʿAbbās, and Salmān. 1 - The ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar. It is narrated by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī, who said: Yaḥyá al-Bakkāʾ narrated to us from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: "A man belched in the presence of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he said" and mentioned it. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (2/78) and Ibn Mājah (3350), and al-Tirmidhī said: "A strange ḥadīth from this route." I said: Meaning weak, because Yaḥyá ibn Muslim al-Bakkāʾ is weak. And ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī is denounced in ḥadīth as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." Ibn Abī Ḥātim said in "al-ʿIlal" (2/139) from his father: "This is a denounced ḥadīth." 2 - The ḥadīth of Abū Juḥayfah, and it has multiple routes: The first: from ʿAwn ibn Abī Juḥayfah from his father, who said: "I ate wheat bread with fatty meat, then I came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and belched, and he said: Restrain or hold back your belching..." the ḥadīth, and he added: "He said: Abū Juḥayfah did not fill his stomach until he departed from this world." It was narrated by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in "al-Jūʿ" (2/2) through the route of al-Walīd ibn ʿAmr ibn Sājʿ from him. I said: And this al-Walīd is weak, weakened by Ibn Maʿīn, al-Nasāʾī, and others. But he was not alone in narrating it, as Ibn Abī Ḥātim said in "al-ʿIlal" (2/123): "I heard my father mention a ḥadīth that was in the book of ʿAmr ibn Marzūq, and he did not narrate it from Mālik ibn Mughawwal from ʿAwn ibn Abī Juḥayfah... (and he mentioned it) and I heard my father say: This is a false ḥadīth, and I have not heard that ʿAmr ibn Marzūq ever narrated it."
