"Whoever believes in Allāh and the Last Day should not wear silk or gold." It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (4/191) through the route of ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith and others from Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from al-Qāsim from Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it, and he mentioned it. He said: "Its isnād is authentic." And al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: Rather, it is ḥasan, for al-Qāsim, who is Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the companion of Abū Umāmah, has been critiqued by some, and the prevailing opinion among the scholars' statements about him is that he is ḥasan in ḥadīth, and al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful." And Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is Ibn ʿĪsá al-Dimashqī of Khurasānī origin, and he was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Maʿīn, al-Nasāʾī, and others. As for ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, he is Abū Ayyūb al-Miṣrī, a trustworthy, knowledgeable, and reliable memorizer. As for "others" referred to in the isnād, it appears to be ʿAbd Allāh ibn Lahīʿah, for we have seen him paired with ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith in more than one ḥadīth, and Aḥmad recorded it through his route, saying (5/261): Yaḥyá ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, informing me of Ibn Lahīʿah from Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān with it. And al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (3/103): "Aḥmad narrated it, and its narrators are trustworthy!"
