- (O Allāh! I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, cowardice and miserliness, old age, and the torment of the grave. O Allāh! Grant my soul its piety, and purify it, for You are the best to purify it. You are its Protector and Master. O Allāh! I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not humble, from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered.) It was recorded by Muslim (8/81), and al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (5/158) - and he authenticated it - and by Ibn Abī Shaybah (3/374), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (5/227/5085) through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith and Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, both from Zayd ibn Arqam who said: I do not say to you except as the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to say. He used to say: ... and he mentioned it. It was also narrated by al-Nasāʾī (2/315 and 322), and Aḥmad (4/371), and ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd (1/245/267), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (5086 and 5088), all from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith alone. Al-Ṭabarānī added - after the phrase: "and the torment of the grave" -: "and the trial of the Dajjāl," and its chain is good, but it is anomalous in this ḥadīth; however, it has been established in other authentic ḥadīths, and perhaps this is what allowed al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Suyūṭī to mention it in the ḥadīth with the narration: (Ḥam, ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, M, N)! Accordingly, he fell short as he did not attribute it to al-Ṭabarānī, who was unique in this addition without the others. *
