and in another narration from him (3/37) through the route of al-Muʿallá ibn Ziyād: al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Bashīr narrated to us from Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "I give you glad tidings of the Mahdī, who will be sent amidst differences among people and earthquakes, and he will fill the earth with justice and fairness as it was filled with tyranny and oppression. The inhabitants of the heavens and the earth will be pleased with him, and he will distribute wealth evenly." A man asked him: What does evenly mean? He said: "Equally among the people." He said: "And Allāh will fill the hearts of the Ummah of Muḥammad (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) with contentment, and his justice will encompass them, until he commands a caller to announce, saying: Who has a need for wealth? And no one will stand except one man, who will say: Go to the treasurer and tell him: The Mahdī commands you to give me wealth. So he will say to him: Take! Until when he places it in his lap and takes it out, he regrets, saying: I was the greediest soul among the Ummah of Muḥammad, was what sufficed them not enough for me?! He said: So he returns it but it will not be accepted from him, and it will be said to him: We do not take back anything we have given." It will be like that for seven years, or eight years, or nine years, then there will be no good in living after him, or he said: then there will be no good in life after him." I said: Its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of Muslim, except for al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Bashīr, who is unknown, as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." But he has been followed in part of it by al-Ḥākim (4/558). And ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī narrated it from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī as a marfūʿ ḥadīth with the wording: "A man will emerge at the end of time, amidst the appearance of trials, who will be called: (al-Saffāḥ), and his giving of wealth will be by handfuls."
