we were with Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh when he said: "The people of Iraq are soon going to be deprived of the qafīz and the dirham." We asked: "From where will that happen?" He said: "From the Persians, they will prevent that." Then he said: "The people of al-Shām are soon going to be deprived of the dinar and the mudd." We asked: "From where will that happen?" He said: "From the Romans." Then he was silent for a while, and then said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ... (and he mentioned it)." He said: "I asked Abū Naḍrah and Abū al-ʿAlāʾ: 'Do you think it is ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz?' They said: 'No.'" Then it was recorded by Muslim, and al-Ḥākim (4/454) through the route of Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind from Abū Naḍrah from Abū Saʿīd and Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: ... and they mentioned it in a concise form with the wording: "In the last days, there will be a caliph who will distribute wealth without counting it." And it was recorded by Aḥmad (3/49, 60, 96) through other routes from Abū Naḍrah from Abū Saʿīd alone. Then it was recorded (3/98) from Mujālid from Abū al-Wadāk from Abū Saʿīd who said: "By Allāh, no leader comes to us except that he is worse than the one before, and no year comes except that it is worse than the one before." He said: "If it were not for something I heard from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), I would have said the same as you, but I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: 'Among your leaders is a leader who will scoop wealth abundantly without counting it. A man will come to him asking, and he will say: "Take." The man will spread his garment, and he will scoop into it'—and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) spread a thick cloak that was on him, mimicking the man's action—'then he will gather its edges and take it away.'" And Mujālid—who is Ibn Saʿīd—is not strong [in ḥadīth transmission]
