- "For one of you to have his stomach filled with pus until it overflows is better for him than to have it filled with poetry." This ḥadīth has been narrated by a group of the Prophet's Companions (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), including Abū Hurayrah, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, ʿUmar, and others. 1 - As for the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, it was recorded by al-Bukhārī (4/146) and in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (860), Muslim (7/50), Abū Dāwūd (5009), al-Tirmidhī (2/139), Ibn Mājah (3759), al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Sharḥ al-Maʿānī" (2/370), and Aḥmad (2/288, 355, 391, 478, 480) through various chains from al-Aʿmash from Abū Ṣāliḥ from him. Al-Aʿmash explicitly stated the transmission in al-Bukhārī's narration. He was followed by ʿĀṣim from Abū Ṣāliḥ with the same chain in al-Ṭaḥāwī. It was also recorded by Aḥmad (2/331). He was followed by Abū Maʿmar from Abū Ṣāliḥ with the same chain. However, I do not know this Abū Maʿmar. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth." 2 - As for the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar, it was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Ṣaḥīḥ" and in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (870), al-Dārimī (2/297), and Aḥmad (2/39, 96, 223) from Ḥanẓalah from Sālim from him. 3 - As for the ḥadīth of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, it was recorded by Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah (3760), Aḥmad (1/175, 181, /8/), Abū Yaʿlá (Q 53/1, 54/1), and Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām in "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth" (Q 7/1) through various chains from Shuʿbah from Qatādah from Yūnus ibn Jubayr from Muḥammad ibn Saʿd from Saʿd with the same chain. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth."
