so I returned to the Messenger of Allāh in the evening, and I burst into tears, with ʿUmar following me closely; the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "What is the matter with you, O Abū Hurayrah?" I said: I met ʿUmar, and I informed him of what you sent me with, and he struck me between my chest, causing me to fall on my backside; he said: Return! The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "O ʿUmar! What prompted you to do what you did?!" He said: O Messenger of Allāh! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, did you send Abū Hurayrah with your sandals to give glad tidings of Paradise to whoever he meets who bears witness that there is no deity but Allāh, with a heart certain of it?! He said: "Yes." He said: Do not do so; for I fear that people will rely on it, so leave them to act. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Then leave them." I said: And this is a good isnād; for although ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār is among the narrators of Muslim, there is some discussion about his memory, especially in what he narrates from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr, and this is not from his narration from him as you see. This story has also been narrated as occurring between Jābir and ʿUmar: it was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" with a sound chain, and it has been previously referenced under number (2355). The ḥadīth provides sound guidance for preachers that they should not relate ḥadīths of encouragement and warning except with a detailed explanation of their intended meaning; for fear that they might be misunderstood, and people might rely on them, as in the example:
