"Take these two sandals of mine; whoever you meet beyond this wall who testifies that there is no deity but Allāh, with certainty in his heart, give him the glad tidings of Paradise." It was recorded by Muslim (1/44-45), and Abū ʿAwānah (1/9-10) through the route of ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār, who said: Abū Kathīr narrated to me, saying: Abū Hurayrah narrated to me, saying: We were sitting around the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar among a group, when the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) stood up from among us, and he delayed in returning to us, and we feared that he might be taken away from us, so we became anxious and stood up. I was the first to become anxious, so I went out seeking the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), until I came to a wall belonging to the Anṣār, to the Banū al-Najjār, and I circled around it to see if I could find a door; but I did not find one. Then I saw a small stream entering into the interior of the wall from an external well—and the stream was a small canal—so I squeezed myself through and entered upon the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he said: "Abū Hurayrah?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allāh! He said: "What is your matter?" I said: You were among us, then you stood up and delayed in returning to us, and we feared that you might be taken away from us, so we became anxious, and I was the first to become anxious, so I came to this wall and squeezed myself through like a fox, and these people are behind me! He said: "O Abū Hurayrah!" and he gave me his sandals, saying: ... (and he mentioned the ḥadīth). And he said: The first person I met was ʿUmar, who said: What are these two sandals, O Abū Hurayrah?! I said: These are the sandals of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), he sent me with them: whoever I meet who testifies that there is no deity but Allāh, with certainty in his heart, I give him the glad tidings of Paradise. So ʿUmar struck me with his hand between my chest, and I fell on my backside, and he said: Return, O Abū Hurayrah!
