(If one of you arrives at night, let him not come to his family unexpectedly until the absent woman has shaved and the disheveled woman has combed her hair). Narrated by Muslim (6/55), al-Nasāʾī in "al-Sunan al-Kubrā" (5/362/9145), and Aḥmad (3/298 and 355), all from the route of Shuʿbah from Sayyār from ʿĀmir from Jābir who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said... and he mentioned it. From this route, it was narrated by al-Bukhārī (5243) in a summarized form; however, he said: from Shuʿbah: Muḥārib ibn Dithār told us, he said: I heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) disliked for a man to come to his family unexpectedly. Hushaym followed him: Sayyār informed us from Jābir, he said: We were with the Messenger of Allāh on a journey, and when we returned, we intended to enter, and he said: "Wait until we enter at night—meaning after dinner—so that the disheveled woman may comb her hair and the absent woman may shave." Narrated by Aḥmad (3/303), al-Bukhārī (5079, 5245, and 5247), and also by Muslim, Abū ʿAwānah (5/114), as well as al-Nasāʾī (9144), and Abū Dāwūd (2778) — from the route of Imām Aḥmad. Abū Dāwūd said: "al-Zuhrī said: The unexpected arrival is after dinner." Abū Dāwūd said: "And after Maghrib, there is no harm in it." The ḥadīth has other routes and similar wordings, narrated by Aḥmad (229, 308, and 310)
