and for the first part of the ḥadīth, there are authentic corroborations, including: 1- from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saw spittle on the wall of the qiblah and scraped it off, then turned to the people and said: "When one of you is praying, he should not spit in front of him, for Allāh is in front of him when he prays." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1/406), Muslim (2/75), and Abū ʿAwānah (1/403-404) from him. 2- from Anas: that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saw phlegm in the qiblah, and it distressed him until it was visible on his face; so he stood up and scraped it off with his hand, and said: "When one of you stands in his prayer, he is conversing with his Lord—or he is between him and the qiblah—so none of you should spit in front of his qiblah, but rather to his left or under his feet." Then he took the edge of his garment, spat in it, and folded part of it over another, saying: "Or do like this." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1/405)—and this is his wording—Muslim (2/76), Abū ʿAwānah (1/405), Ibn Ḥibbān (2264), and al-Nasāʾī (1/119) through two chains from Anas. *
