"when you see a funeral procession, stand up, and whoever follows it should not sit down until it is placed." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1310), Muslim, as well as al-Tirmidhī (1043), al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad (3/51). Al-Tirmidhī said: "It is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth, and it is the opinion of Aḥmad and Isḥāq, who said: whoever follows a funeral procession should not sit down until it is placed from the shoulders of the men." Then Aḥmad narrated (3/48) through the chain of Shurayk from Suhayl from his father from Abū Saʿīd who said: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when he followed a funeral procession, would not sit down until it was placed. The understanding from this—and likewise the ḥadīth of the chapter—is that one may sit after it is placed on the ground, and al-Bukhārī titled the ḥadīth accordingly, saying: "Chapter: Whoever follows a funeral procession should not sit down until it is placed from the shoulders of the men, and if he sits, he is ordered to stand." The two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim] and others narrated from the ḥadīth of ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah in a marfūʿ form similar to the ḥadīth of the chapter.
