- "Indeed, your companion is being washed by the angels." This refers to Ḥanẓalah. Narrated by al-Ḥākim (3/204) and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (4/15) from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: Yaḥyá ibn ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me from his father from his grandfather (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say at the killing of Ḥanẓalah ibn Abī ʿĀmir after he and Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith met when Shaddād ibn al-Aswad struck him with the sword and killed him. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) then mentioned it. They asked his wife, and she said: He went out when he heard the call to arms while he was in a state of major ritual impurity. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: That is why the angels washed him. He said: "Authentic according to the conditions of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī remained silent about it, but it is only ḥasan because Ibn Isḥāq was only cited by Muslim in supporting narrations. It has a corroborating narration reported by Ibn ʿAsākir (2/296/1) from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAṭāʾ, who informed us from Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah from Qatādah from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: "The two tribes of Aws and Khazraj boasted, and the Aws said: Among us is the one washed by the angels, Ḥanẓalah ibn al-Rāhib, and among us is the one for whom the Throne of the Most Merciful shook, and among us is the one protected by the bees, ʿĀṣim ibn Thābit ibn al-Aflah, and among us is the one whose testimony was accepted as that of two men, Khuzaymah ibn Thābit. The Khazraj said: Among us are four who gathered the Qurʾān, which no one else did: Zayd ibn Thābit, Abū Zayd, Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, and Muʿādh ibn Jabal." Ibn ʿAsākir said: "This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth."
