"I give to some people because I fear their weakness and anxiety, and I entrust others to what Allāh has placed in their hearts of [wealth and] goodness; [among them is ʿAmr ibn Taghlib]." Narrated by al-Bukhārī (923, 3145, 7535) and Aḥmad (5/69) through various chains from Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim from al-Ḥasan: I heard ʿAmr ibn Taghlib say: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) gave to some people and withheld from others; it was as if they were displeased with him, so he said: ... and he mentioned it. ʿAmr ibn Taghlib said: I would not like to have in exchange for the words of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) red camels. The wording is from al-Bukhārī—in the second instance of it—and the additions are from the other two instances. There is another chain from al-Ḥasan: narrated by al-Ṭayālisī in "Musnad" (1170) and Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in "al-Āḥād wa-al-Mathānī" (1665) through the chain of Mubārak from al-Ḥasan. Mubārak is Ibn Faḍālah; a well-known mudallis. What precedes it suffices. There is a corroborating narration from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, raised: "I give to some men and leave those who are more beloved to me than them—I give them nothing—out of fear that they will be thrown into the Fire on their faces." Narrated by al-Bukhārī (27, 1478), Muslim (1/91-92, 3/104), Abū Dāwūd (4685), and al-Nasāʾī in "al-Sunan al-Ṣughrā" (8/103-104, 104) and "al-Kubrā."
