ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās said: A man from the Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) from the Anṣār informed me: that while they were sitting one night with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), a star was shot and illuminated, so the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to them: "What would you say in the pre-Islamic period when something like this happened?" They said: Allāh and His Messenger know best! We used to say: A great man was born tonight, and a great man died. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Indeed, it is..." and he mentioned it. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3224), and al-Nasāʾī in "al-Sunan al-Kubrā" (11272), and from him by al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Mushkil al-Āthār" (2334), and Aḥmad (1/218), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Dalāʾil" (2/236-237) and in "al-Asmāʾ wa-al-Ṣifāt" (203-204), and Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (3/143) through various paths from al-Zuhrī with it. And it appears in some of these sources: from men..., which is also a narration in Muslim, and it is similar in meaning to the first narration; with his saying in it: "Indeed, they..." It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3224), and Aḥmad (1/218), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Dalāʾil" (2/238), and ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd (682) through various paths from al-Zuhrī from ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ... with it. I say: All the isnāds are authentic; so whether its narrator is Ibn ʿAbbās from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), or Ibn ʿAbbās from another Companion from him (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), the matter is broad by the grace of Allāh, and all the Companions are just and trustworthy. And the ḥadīth has a supporting narration from ʿĀʾishah in a similar, abbreviated form: narrated by al-Bukhārī (5762 and 7561), Muslim (7/36), and Aḥmad (6/87).
