of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ... and mentioned it. She said: And I did not hear him order his killing. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1831 and 3306), Muslim (7/42), al-Nasāʾī (2/63), Ibn Mājah (3230), Ibn Ḥibbān (3952), al-Bayhaqī (5/210-211), and Aḥmad (6/87-271 and 279). Ibn Ḥibbān said: "And this is strange!" I said: I do not see the reason for his finding it strange; its narrators are mountains in memorization, especially since the second ḥadīth supports it. As for the ḥadīth of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ; it is narrated by Muslim, Abū Dāwūd (5262), Ibn Ḥibbān (5606), and Aḥmad (1/176) through the route of al-Zuhrī also from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ from him in a marfūʿ form. This; and it is not hidden that ʿĀʾishah's statement: (And I did not hear him order his killing); does not negate that others may have heard it from him (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and from here it is said: the one who knows is a proof against the one who does not know; thus Saʿd knew what she did not know; as it is established from Umm Shurayk that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ordered the killing of the gecko; as in al-Bukhārī and others, and its documentation has passed under number (1581). And there is a narration from ʿĀʾishah herself that she used to kill geckos, if that is authentic! Then she would have returned to the ḥadīth of others who heard that from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). (Note): The statement of ʿĀʾishah mentioned did not appear in Ibn Ḥibbān's narration of the ḥadīth, and the commentator on it (9/277) overlooked this; attributing it only to al-Bukhārī!
