11- when morning came, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "The best of our horsemen today was Abū Qatādah, and the best of our foot soldiers was Salamah." He said: Then the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) gave me two shares; the share of the horseman and the share of the foot soldier, and combined them for me. Then the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) had me ride behind him on al-ʿAḍbāʾ as we returned to Madīnah. 12- He said: While we were traveling—he said: and there was a man from the Anṣār who was unmatched in running—he began to say: "Is there anyone to race to Madīnah? Is there anyone to race?" He kept repeating that. He said: When I heard his words, I said: "Do you not honor the noble and fear the dignified?" He said: "No, except if it is the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." I said: "O Messenger of Allāh! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, allow me to race the man!" He said: "If you wish." He said: "Go ahead," so I dismounted and leaped, then ran. He said: I paced myself for a stretch or two to conserve my energy, then I ran after him and paced myself for a stretch or two, then I sped up until I caught up with him. He said: I tapped him between his shoulders and said: "By Allāh, I have beaten you!" He said: "I think so," and I beat him to Madīnah. 13- He said: By Allāh, we did not stay more than three nights before we set out to Khaybar with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). He said: My uncle ʿĀmir began to chant for the people: "By Allāh, if it were not for Allāh, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. And we are not independent of Your favor, so make firm our steps when we meet [the enemy], and send down tranquility upon us."
