nor their dust at all, until they turned before sunset to a valley with water called (Dhū Qarad) to drink from it while they were thirsty. He said: They saw me running after them, so I drove them away from it (meaning: I expelled them from it), and they did not taste a single drop. He said: They went out and hurried to a pass. He said: I ran and caught up with one of them, striking him with an arrow in the back of his shoulder. I said: "Take this from me, for I am the son of al-Akwaʿ, and today is the day of the suckling." He said: "May his mother be bereaved of him! Is it al-Akwaʿ in the morning?!" I said: "Yes, you enemy of yourself! It is al-Akwaʿ in the morning." He said: They left two horses on the pass. He said: I brought them, driving them to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). He said: ʿĀmir caught up with me with a small container of milk and a container of water, so I performed ablution and drank, then I came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) at the water from which I had driven them away; and there was the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) who had taken those camels, and everything I had rescued from the polytheists, every spear and cloak, and Bilāl had slaughtered a camel from the camels I had rescued from the people, and he was roasting for the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) from its liver and hump. He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allāh! Allow me to select one hundred men from the people and pursue them; there will not remain a single informant among them except that I will kill him." He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) laughed until his molars were visible in the light of the fire. He said: "O Salamah! Do you think you would have done it?" I said: "Yes, by the One who honored you!" He said: "They are now settling in the land of Ghatafān." He said: A man from Ghatafān came and said: "So-and-so slaughtered a camel for them, and when they uncovered its skin, they saw dust, and they said: 'The people have come to you,' so they went out fleeing."
