"will you not pledge allegiance to me, O Salamah?!" He said: I replied, "I have already pledged allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allāh, among the first and the middle of the people!" He said, "And again." He said: So I pledged allegiance to him a third time, then he said to me, "O Salamah! Where is your buckler or shield that I gave you?" He said: I replied, "O Messenger of Allāh! My uncle ʿĀmir met me unarmed, so I gave it to him." He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) laughed and said: ... and then he mentioned the ḥadīth. Then the polytheists sent us a message for peace, until some of us mingled with others and we reconciled. He said: I was a follower of Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, tending to his horse, grooming it, serving him, and eating from his food, and I left my family and wealth as a migrant for the sake of Allāh and His Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). He said: When we and the people of Makkah reconciled and mingled with each other, I went to a tree, cleared its thorns, and lay down at its base. He said: Then four polytheists from the people of Makkah came to me, and they began to speak ill of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam); I despised them, so I moved to another tree, and they hung up their weapons and lay down. While they were in that state, a caller from the bottom of the valley shouted: "O for the migrants! Ibn Zunām has been killed." He said: I drew my sword, then charged at those four while they were asleep, took their weapons, and made them a bundle in my hand. He said: Then I said: "By the One who honored the face of Muḥammad, no one among you shall raise his head except that I will strike the one with eyes." He said: Then I brought them, driving them to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). He said: And my uncle ʿĀmir came with a man from the ʿAbalāt tribe called Mukraz, leading him to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on a decorated horse, among seventy of the polytheists. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) looked at them and said, "Leave them; let them have the initiation of wickedness and its repetition."
