so the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) pardoned them, and Allāh revealed: "And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of Makkah after He caused you to overcome them..." the entire verse. He said: Then we set out returning to Madīnah, and we camped at a place with a mountain between us and Banū Lahyān, who were the polytheists. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sought forgiveness for whoever climbed this mountain that night, as if he were a scout for the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and his companions. Salamah said: I climbed it that night two or three times. Then we arrived in Madīnah, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent his mounts with Rabāḥ, the servant of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and I was with him. I went out with him with the horse of Ṭalḥah to water it with the mounts. When morning came, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Fazārī had raided the mounts of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), driving them all away and killing their herder. He said: I said, "O Rabāḥ! Take this horse to Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh and inform the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that the polytheists have raided his herd." Then I stood on a hillock facing Madīnah and called out three times, "O morning!" Then I went in pursuit of the people, shooting arrows at them and chanting: "I am the son of al-Akwaʿ, and today is the day of the suckling." I caught up with one of them and struck him with an arrow in his saddlebag until the arrowhead reached his shoulder. He said: I said, "Take that, for I am the son of al-Akwaʿ, and today is the day of the suckling." He said: By Allāh! I continued to shoot at them and wound them. If a horseman returned to me, I would go to a tree and sit at its base, then shoot at him and wound him. When the mountain narrowed, and they entered its narrow path, I climbed the mountain and began to hurl stones at them! He said: I continued to pursue them in this manner,
فعفا عنهم رسول الله ﷺ، وأنزل الله: ﴿وهو الذي كل أيديهم عنكم وأيديكم عنهم ببطن مكة من بعد أن أظفركم عليهم ... ﴾ الآية كلها. قال:٧- ثم خرجنا راجعين إلى المدينة، فنزلنا منزلاً، بيننا وبين بني لحيان جبل، وهم المشركون، فاستغفر رسول الله ﷺ لمن رقي هذا الجبل الليلة؛ كأنه طليعة للنبي ﷺ وأصحابه. قال سلمة: فرقيت تلك الليلة مرتين أو ثلاثاً.٨ـ ثم قدمنا المدينة، فبعث رسول الله ﷺ بظهره مع رباح غلام رسول الله ﷺ وأنا معه، وخرجت معه بفرس طلحة أندّيه مع الظهر، فلما أصبحنا؛ إذا عبد الرحمن الفزاريّ قد أغار على ظهر رسول الله ﷺ، فاستاقه أجمع، وقتل راعيه. قال: فقلت: يا رباح! خذ هذا الفرس فأبلغه طلحة بن عبيد الله، وأخبر رسول الله ﷺ أن المشركين قد أغاروا على سرحه، قال: ثم قمت على أكمة فاستقبلت المدينة، فناديت ثلاثاً: يا صباحاه! ثم خرجت في آثار القوم أرميهم بالنبل وأرتجز أقول:أنا ابن الأكوع واليوم يوم الرضّعفألحقُ رجلاً منهم فأصكّ سهماًفي رحله، حتى خلص نصل السهم إلى كتفه. قال: قلت: خذهاوأنا ابن الأكوع واليوم يوم الرضّعقال: فوالله! ما زلت أرميهم أعقرُ بهم، فإذا رجع إلي فارس؛ أتيت شجرة فجلست في أصلها، ثم رميته فعقرت به، حتى إذا تضايق الجبل، فدخلوا في تضايقه؛ علوت الجبل فجعلت أرديهم بالحجارة! قال: فما زلت كذلك أتبعهم،
