(You are like the one who said first: O Allāh! Grant me a beloved who is dearer to me than myself). It was narrated by Muslim (5/190) through the route of Iyās ibn Salamah: My father told me, saying: We came to al-Ḥudaybiyyah with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam); we were fourteen hundred, and there were fifty sheep that could not quench our thirst. He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sat on the edge of the well, and either he prayed or spat into it, and it gushed forth, so we drank and filled our vessels. He said: Then the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) called us to pledge allegiance under the tree. He said: I was the first to pledge allegiance to him, then others pledged and pledged, until he was in the midst of the people and said: "Pledge allegiance, O Salamah!" I said: I have already pledged allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allāh! Among the first people! He said: "Again." He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saw me unarmed (meaning: without a weapon) and gave me a shield or a buckler, then he continued to take pledges until he was among the last of the people and said:
(إنك كالذي قال الأول: اللهم! أبغني حبيباً هو أحبّ إلي من نفسي). أخرجه مسلم (٥/١٩٠) من طريق إياس بن سلمة: حدثني أبي قال: قدمنا الحديبية مع رسول الله ﷺ؛ ونحن أربع عشرة مئة، وعليها خمسون شاة لا تُرويها، قال: فقعد رسول الله ﷺ على جَبَا الرّكية، فإما دعا وإما بصق فيها، قال: فجاشت، فسقينا واستقينا. قال: ثم إن رسول الله ﷺ دعانا للبيعة في أصل الشجرة، قال: فبايعته أوّل الناس، ثم بايع وبايع، حتى إذا كان في وسط من الناس قال: "بايع يا سلمة!". قال: قلت: قد بايعتك يا رسول الله! في أول الناس! قال: "وأيضاً". قال: ورآني رسول الله ﷺ عزلاً (يعني: ليس معه سلاح) قال: فأعطاني رسول الله ﷺ حجفة أو درقة، ثم بايع حتى إذا كان في آخر الناس قال:
