when al-Ḥajjāj killed Ibn al-Zubayr and crucified him upside down, while he was on the pulpit; Asmāʾ came with a servant girl leading her, as her sight had gone, and she said: "Where is your leader?" ... Then she mentioned a story and said: "You have lied, but I will tell you a ḥadīth I heard from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying: 'Two liars will emerge from Thaqīf; the latter of them is worse than the former, and he is a destroyer.'" It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/352) and its isnād is good. Among them: Umm Abī al-Maḥyāh said: when al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf killed ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr; al-Ḥajjāj entered upon Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr, and he said to her: "O mother! The Commander of the Faithful has entrusted me with you, so do you have any need?" She replied: "I am not your mother! But I am the mother of the one crucified on the hilltop, and I have no need, but wait until I tell you what I heard from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying: 'A liar and a destroyer will emerge from Thaqīf.'" As for the liar; we have seen him, and as for the destroyer; it is you!" Al-Ḥajjāj said: "Destroyer of the hypocrites." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah" (6/481-482). And Abū al-Maḥyāh, trustworthy, his name is Yaḥyá ibn Yaʿlá, but I did not know his mother. Among them: al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad al-Thaqafī: that Asmāʾ came to al-Ḥajjāj after her sight had gone with her maidservants ... the ḥadīth. It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd. And this al-Thaqafī; I did not know him
