he was corroborated by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir, who said: Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd narrated to me with a more complete version, saying: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went out for a need and passed by a camel kneeling at the door of the mosque in the early part of the day, then he passed by it later in the day and it was in the same condition. He said: 'Where is the owner of this camel?' He was sought but not found. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'Fear Allāh regarding these animals, then ride them in good health, and ride them when they are well-fed,' as if he was displeased just now." It was narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān (844) and Aḥmad (4/180-181) and its chain is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī. (Note): His statement (feed them) is restricted by the dammah on the kāf from eating, and al-Munāwī followed this explanation in his commentary on this word. If the narration is authentic with this wording, then there is no issue. Otherwise, what seems more likely to me is that it is (leave them) with a kasrah on the kāf from wakala yakilu kul, meaning leave them. This is what is apparent from the context of the ḥadīth. This is supported by the previous ḥadīth (number 22) with the wording "Ride these animals safely, and leave them safely..." meaning leave them safely, and Allāh knows best. (al-Muʿjamah): meaning those that cannot speak to complain about what has afflicted them from hunger or thirst. The original meaning of al-aʿjam is one who does not articulate in Arabic and does not speak it well, whether non-Arab or Arab, named so because of the inarticulateness of his tongue and the ambiguity of his speech.
وقد تابعه عبد الرحمن بن يزيد بن جابر قال: حدثني ربيعة بن يزيد به أتم منه ولفظه:" خرج رسول الله ﷺ في حاجة فمر ببعير مناخ على باب المسجد من أول النهار، ثم مر به آخر النهار وهو على حاله، فقال: أين صاحب هذا البعير؟ ! فابتغي فلم يوجد، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: (اتقوا الله في هذه البهائم، ثم اركبوها صحاحا، واركبوها سمانا) كالمتسخط آنفا ". رواه ابن حبان (٨٤٤) وأحمد (٤ / ١٨٠ - ١٨١) وسنده صحيح على شرط البخاري. (تنبيه) : قوله (كلوها) قيدوها بضم الكاف من الأكل وعليه جرى المناوي في شرح هذه الكلمة، فإذا صحت الرواية بذلك فلا كلام، وإلا فالأقرب عندي أنها (كلوها) بكسر الكاف من وكل يكل كل أي اتركووها، هذا هو المتبادر من سياق الحديث. ويؤيده الحديث المتقدم (رقم ٢٢) بلفظ " اركبوا هذه الدواب سالمة، وايتدعوها سالمة ... "، أي اتركوها سالمة والله أعلم. (المعجمة) : أي التي لا تقدر على النطق فتشكو ما أصابها من جوع أو عطش، وأصل الأعجم: الذي لا يفصح بالعربية ولا يجيد التكلم بها عجميا كان أو عربيا سمي به لعجمة لسانه، والتباس كلامه.
- "Could you not have done this before! Do you want to kill it twice?!" It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (3/140/1) and "al-Awsaṭ" (1/31/1 from its additions) and al-Bayhaqī (9/280) from Yūsuf ibn ʿAdī who narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Sulaymān al-Rāzī from ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal from ʿIkrimah from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed by a man who had placed his foot on the side of a sheep while sharpening his knife, and it was looking at him with its eyes, so he mentioned it
