- "Indeed, ʿAbd Allāh is a righteous man; if only he would pray more at night." It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (2/1291/3919) through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿādh al-Ṣanʿānī from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar who said: I was a young unmarried man during the time of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam); so I used to sleep in the mosque, and whoever among us saw a dream would narrate it to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). So I said: O Allāh! If there is any good for me with You, show me a dream that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) can interpret for me. Then I slept and saw two angels who came to me and took me away. They were met by another angel who said: Do not be alarmed. They took me to the Fire, and it was folded like a well, and there were people in it whom I recognized. They took me to the right side, and when I woke up, I mentioned this to Ḥafṣah. She claimed that she narrated it to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who said: ... and he mentioned the ḥadīth. He said: So ʿAbd Allāh began to pray more at night. I said: This isnād is good; its men are trustworthy, the men of al-Bukhārī, except for ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿādh al-Ṣanʿānī, who is Maʿmar's companion. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful, but ʿAbd al-Razzāq criticized him." ʿAbd al-Razzāq followed him in al-Bukhārī (3738) and Muslim (7/158), and Hishām ibn Yūsuf also followed him in al-Bukhārī (7030), both from Maʿmar with it. Hishām added after the phrase: "Do not be alarmed": "You are a righteous man." Nāfiʿ followed Sālim, that Ibn ʿUmar said: ... and he mentioned a similar story
