and the ḥadīth has a supporting narration from the ḥadīth of al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdīkarib, also with al-Bukhārī, and it is referenced in "Ghayat al-Maram" (121/163).

"Indeed, Allāh withheld killing—or the elephant, Abū ʿAbdullāh was uncertain—from Mecca, and He empowered the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and the believers over it. Verily, it was not lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be lawful for anyone after me. Indeed, it was made lawful for me for an hour of the day. Now, it is sacred; its thorns are not to be plucked, its trees are not to be cut, and its lost items are not to be picked up except by someone who announces it. Whoever is killed has two options: either compensation is paid, or the family of the slain seeks retribution." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (112, 2434, 6880), Muslim (4/110), al-Dārimī (2/265), Aḥmad (2/238), and from him by Abū Dāwūd (2017), al-Dāraquṭnī (3/96/58), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (8/52) and "al-Dalāʾil" (5/84), all through the route of Abū Salamah from Abū Hurayrah: that Khuzāʿah killed a man from Banū Layth during the year of the conquest of Mecca in retaliation for one of theirs who was killed. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was informed of this, so he mounted his camel and delivered a sermon, saying: ... and he mentioned it. The two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim] and others added: A man from Yemen came and said: "Write for me, O Messenger of Allāh!" He said: "Write for Abū so-and-so." A man from Quraysh said: "Except for the idhkhir, O Messenger of Allāh! For we use it in our houses and graves." The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said:
