a tree, and he said to me: Go and find out who that is. So I went, and it was Ṣuhayb. I returned to him and said: You instructed me to find out who that is, and it is Ṣuhayb. He said: Tell him to join us. I said: He is with his family! He said: Even if he is with his family— and sometimes Ayyūb said: Let him join us—! When we reached Medina, the Commander of the Faithful did not delay long before he was afflicted, and Ṣuhayb came and said: Oh my brother! Oh my companion! ʿUmar said: Did you not know—or did you not hear—that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "The deceased is tormented by some of the weeping of his family over him"?! As for ʿAbdullāh, he reported it generally, but ʿUmar said: "by some of the weeping..." I went to ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā) and mentioned to her what ʿUmar said. She said: No, by Allāh! The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) did not say that the deceased is tormented by anyone's weeping! But the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said... and she mentioned the ḥadīth. [She said]: And indeed, it is Allāh who causes laughter and weeping, "and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another" (Sūrah al-Anʿām, 6:164)! Ayyūb said: Ibn Abī Mulaykah said: al-Qāsim told me that when ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā) heard what ʿUmar and Ibn ʿUmar said, she said: You are narrating to me from truthful people, not liars, but hearing can be mistaken. And it was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (1/263) with some abridgment. (Note): It is clear from the preceding context that Lady ʿĀʾishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) corrected ʿUmar and his son (may Allāh be pleased with them) regarding what they heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "The deceased is tormented by the weeping—or some of the weeping—of his family over him." She explained this by saying that hearing can be mistaken, and she believed that the correct understanding of the ḥadīth is that the disbeliever is the one who is tormented by the weeping of his family.
شجرة، فقال لي: انطلق فاعلم من ذاك؟ فانطلقت؛ فإذا هو صهيب، فرجعت إليه فقلت: إنك أمرتني أن أَعْلَمَ لك من ذاك؟ وإنه صهيب. فقال: مروه فليلحق بنا. فقلت: إن معه أهله! قال: وإن كان معه أهله- وربما قال أيوب مرة: فليلحق بنا-! فلما بلغنا المدينة؛ لم يلبث أمير المؤمنين أن أصيب، فجاء صهيب، فقال: واأخاه! واصاحباه! فقال عمر: ألم تعلم- أو لم تسمع- أن رسول الله ﷺ قال:"إن الميت ليعذب ببعض بكاء أهله عليه "؟! فأما عبد الله فأرسلها مرسلة، وأما عمر فقال: "ببعض بكاء ... ". فأتيت عائشة- ﵂، فذكرت لها قول عمر؟ فقالت: لا والله! ما قاله رسول الله ﷺ، إن الميت يعذب ببكاء أحد! ولكن رسول الله ﷺ قال: ... فذكرت الحديث. [قالت] :وإن الله لهو أضحك وأبكى، ﴿ولا تزر وازرة وزر أخرى﴾ ! قال أيوب: وقال ابن أبي مليكة: حدثني القاسم قال:لما بلغ عائشة ﵂ قول عمر وابن عمر؛ قالت:إنكم لتحدثوني عن غير كاذبين، ولا مكذبين، ولكن السمع يخطئ. وأخرجه النسائي (١/٢٦٣) ببعض اختصار.(تنبيه) : من الواضح من السياق المتقدم: أن السيدة عائشة رضي الله تعالى عنها تخطِّئ عمر، وابنه- ﵄ فيما. سمعا رسول الله ﷺ يقول:"إن الميت ليعذب ببكاء- أو ببعض بكاء- أهله عليه ". وعللت ذلك بأن السمع يخطئ، فتذهب إلى أن الصواب في الحديث: أن الكافر هو الذي يعذب ببكاء أهله.
