Ṭāwūs said: I said to Ibn ʿAbbās: They mentioned that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ... then he mentioned the ḥadīth in its entirety. (Note): Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Suyūṭī was brief in his extraction of this ḥadīth; he only attributed it in "al-Ziyādah ʿalá al-Jāmiʿ" to Aḥmad and Ibn Ḥibbān! As for the phrase (applying perfume) which Ibn ʿAbbās did not recognize; it has been authentically reported from more than one of the Companions, including: Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī. It was narrated by the two Shaykhs, and it is extracted in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd" under number (372). And among them: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr; according to Ibn Khuzaymah and others, and it is extracted in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd" under number (375).

- (Indeed, Allāh increases the disbeliever's punishment due to the weeping of his family.) Narrated by al-Bukhārī (1287 and 1288), Muslim (3/42-43), Ibn Ḥibbān (5/54/3126), and Aḥmad (1/41-42), all through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Mulaykah who said: I was with ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, and we were waiting for the funeral of Umm Abān, the daughter of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, and with him was ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān. Then Ibn ʿAbbās came, led by a guide, and I think he informed him of the presence of Ibn ʿUmar, so he came and sat next to me, and I was between them; when there was a sound from the house, Ibn ʿUmar said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "The deceased is punished by the weeping of his family over him," and ʿAbd Allāh sent it forth unconditionally. Ibn ʿAbbās said: We were with the Commander of the Faithful, ʿUmar, until we were at al-Baydāʾ; when he saw a man resting in the shade..
