(If you criticize his leadership—meaning Usāmah ibn Zayd—you have already criticized his father's leadership before him. By Allāh! He was indeed worthy of it, and by Allāh! He was the most beloved of people to me. By Allāh! This one is indeed worthy of it—meaning Usāmah ibn Zayd—and by Allāh! He is the most beloved to me after him. So I advise you regarding him, for he is one of your righteous ones). Narrated by Muslim (7/131), Ibn Saʿd (4/66), and Aḥmad (2/89 and 106) through the route of Sālim from his father that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said while on the pulpit: ... and he mentioned it. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār followed him from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar with it, except for his statement at the end: "So I advise you regarding him..." Narrated by al-Bukhārī (3730, 4250, 4469, 6627, 7187), Muslim (7/131), Ibn Ḥibbān (7004, 7019), al-Tirmidhī (3816) — and he authenticated it — Ibn Saʿd (4/65), al-Bayhaqī (3/128, 8/154, 10/44), and Aḥmad (2/10, 110), all through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār with it. *
