the first: from Saʿīd ibn Kathīr al-Madanī who said: Kulthūm ibn Jabr and Mūsá—without attributing him—told me that they heard ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās say: Abū Dharr said to me: O son of my brother! I was with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) holding his hand, and he said: ... and he mentioned it. It was recorded by al-Bazzār in his "Musnad" (9/342/3899), (4/252/3657 - Kashf al-Astār), (2/492/2277 - Mukhtaṣar al-Zawāʾid) through the path of Saʿīd ibn Kathīr al-Madanī, who said: ... and he mentioned it. Al-Bazzār said: "It has been narrated from Abū Dharr through various means, and we do not know of ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās narrating from Abū Dharr except for this ḥadīth." I said: And this isnād is problematic; for I did not find a biography for Saʿīd ibn Kathīr al-Madanī in any of the biographical works I have, not even in "Thiqāt Ibn Ḥibbān," and perhaps the attribution: (al-Madanī) is a distortion of: (al-Malāʾī); for he is from this generation, and he is trustworthy. And perhaps for this reason, al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (2/43/23): "It was narrated by al-Bazzār with a good isnād." Likewise, al-Haythamī said in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (10/239). More problematic than this is that they did not mention ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās as having narrated from Abū Dharr, but they mentioned his brother ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, so perhaps for this reason al-Mundhirī considered him ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās! But the ḥadīth here—as you see—is only from the narration of Kulthūm ibn Jabr and Mūsá—together; and they did not mention either of them among the narrators from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, but al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī mentioned in the biography of Mūsá ibn Jabr that he:
