that Tamīm al-Dārī performed two units of prayer after ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb had prohibited prayer after the ʿaṣr prayer. ʿUmar came to him and struck him with a stick. Tamīm gestured to him to sit down while he was in his prayer, so ʿUmar sat until Tamīm finished. Then Tamīm said to ʿUmar: Why did you strike me?! He said: Because you performed these two units of prayer, and I had prohibited them. He said: ... (and he mentioned it, adding) ʿUmar said: It is not you I am concerned about, O group! But I fear that after you, people will come who will pray after ʿaṣr until maghrib, reaching the time when the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prohibited prayer, just as they pray between ẓuhr and ʿaṣr, and then they will say: We saw so-and-so and so-and-so praying after ʿaṣr! It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (2/48/281 1) and "al-Awsaṭ" (8/296/8684 - al-Ḥaramayn), and he said: "It is not narrated from Tamīm except with this isnād, and al-Layth is unique in narrating it." I say: He and those above him are trustworthy narrators of the two Shaykhs, so it is a sound isnād if it is free from interruption and from the weakness in Ibn Ṣāliḥ—who is the scribe of al-Layth. Al-Haythamī also critiqued it, saying after attributing it to "the two Muʿjams": "And in it is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, about whom ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Shuʿayb said: 'Trustworthy and reliable,' but Aḥmad and others weakened him." As for the ḥadīth of Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī; it is narrated by Abū Saʿd al-Aʿmā from a man called al-Sāʾib, the client of the Persians, from him: that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—while he was Caliph—saw him perform two units of prayer after ʿaṣr, so he walked to him and struck him with the stick while he was still praying. When he finished, Zayd said: Strike, O Commander of the Faithful!
