and I did not find this ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās with a connected chain — as far as I searched — either! And Allāh is the one who grants success. *

(If you had covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you. He said this to Hazzāl). It is narrated from the ḥadīth of Nuʿaym ibn Hazzāl, Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, and Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, both of them with a broken chain. 1 — As for the ḥadīth of Nuʿaym ibn Hazzāl; there is a difference regarding it as follows: First: from Yazīd ibn Nuʿaym ibn Hazzāl from his father: that Māʿiz came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), confessed to him four times, so he ordered his stoning, and said to Hazzāl: ... and he mentioned it. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4377), al-Nasāʾī in "al-Sunan al-Kubrā" (4/305-306/7274), al-Ḥākim (4/363), al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (8/219 and 228), Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (10/78-79), Aḥmad (5/216-217 and 217), and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in "al-Tamhīd" (23/126); some of them in abridged form — the wording is that of Abū Dāwūd — and some in extended form — which is a narration for Abū Dāwūd (4419) — and the most complete is the narration of Aḥmad, with his wording: Māʿiz ibn Mālik [was an orphan] under the care of my father, and he committed an offense with a girl in the neighborhood, so my father said to him: Go to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and inform him of what you did; perhaps he will seek forgiveness for you, hoping that there might be a way out for him, so he went to him and said: O Messenger of Allāh! I have committed adultery, so apply the Book of Allāh upon me. He turned away from him, then he came to him a second time and said: O Messenger of Allāh! I have committed adultery, so apply the Book of Allāh upon me. Then he came to him a third time and said: O Messenger of Allāh! I have committed adultery, so apply the Book of Allāh upon me. Then he came to him a fourth time and said: O Messenger of Allāh! I have committed adultery, so apply the Book of Allāh upon me! So the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said:
