"you have said it four times, regarding whom?" He said: Regarding so-and-so. He said: "Did you have intercourse with her?" He said: Yes. He said: "Did you engage in foreplay with her?" He said: Yes. He said: "Did you have full intercourse with her?" He said: Yes. He said: So he ordered that he be stoned. He said: He was taken to the ḥarrah, and when he was stoned, he felt the heat of the stones and panicked, so he ran swiftly. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Anīs met him—having outrun his companions—and struck him with a camel bone, killing him. He said: Then he came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and mentioned that to him. So he said: "Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would repent and Allāh would accept his repentance." Hishām said: Yazīd ibn Naʿīm ibn Huzāl narrated to me from his father that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to his father when he saw him: "By Allāh, O Huzāl! If you had covered him with your garment, it would have been better than what you did." (1)
