Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr—my brother—so that I may tell you what I heard from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying in my house: ... and I mentioned it. It was recorded by Muslim (6/7), and Abū ʿAwānah (4/412)—and the context is theirs—and al-Nasāʾī in "al-Kubrā" (5/275/8873)—the second part of it—, Ibn Ḥibbān (1/382/554 - al-Iḥsān), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (9/43 and 10/136), and Aḥmad (6/93, 257, and 258), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ" (10/205/9445), and al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (10/64-65/2471) through the route of Muslim, then he said: "This is a ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth." Abū ʿAwānah added in a narration: Ḥarmalah said: I heard ʿAyāsh ibn ʿAbbās say: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ... and he mentioned it with the wording: "Whoever is given authority over any matter of my ummah and is gentle with them; Allāh will be gentle with him! And whoever is given authority over them and is harsh on them; upon him is the curse of Allāh." They said: O Messenger of Allāh! And what is the curse of Allāh? He said: "The curse of Allāh." I said: And this is objectionable; for it is both disconnected—because this ʿAyāsh is from the followers of the followers—and the teacher of Abū ʿAwānah in it (ʿĪsá ibn Aḥmad al-ʿAsqalānī) from Ibn Wahb from Ḥarmalah... for this ʿĪsá, the ḥāfiẓ said: "Trustworthy but narrates rare things." I said: And this is among his rare and unique narrations; for a group narrated from Ibn Wahb without this addition and wording. Likewise, followers of Ibn Wahb narrated from Ḥarmalah in the aforementioned sources
